A Case of Ischemic Colitis

Abstract
Localized ischemia of the bowel occurs most often in the colon and has been termed ischemic colitis. The syndrome usually occur in older patients. Mild lower abdominal pain and bright-red colored rectal bleeding are the most prominent symptoms. The pathogenesis of this lesion is not well understood. In the majority of patients, no specific vascular disease has been found. Recognition of this syndrome as a specific clinical entity has permitted a much more rational approach to therapy. Surgery will be required only for bowel necrosis and for late ischemic strictures.
We have recently seen a patient with ischemic colitis successfully treated by surgery.
